The Reality and Challenges of English for Specific Purposes: A Case of An Giang University

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses reflect the world’s development and English language learners’ interests in studying the language and future profession. This paper attempts to figure out the reality and challenges in teaching and learning ESP courses at An Giang University (AGU). The paper investigates the perceptions of EFL teachers and learners towards those ESP courses including their objectives, teaching and learning practices as well as the successes and challenges of those courses. Observations, questionnaires, and interviews were conducted with 90 third-year students who had already taken ESP courses and 5 teachers who had already taught those courses. The findings confirm students’ satisfaction with the subjects in terms of their supports to the learners’ professional interests and intentions. In addition, the results also indicate the challenges of the teachers in those courses and presented possible solutions and recommendations for successful teaching and learning ESP courses at AGU.
