Biodiesel production using the co-solvent method: a short review
Tóm tắt
Biodiesel fuel (BDF) is non-toxic, eco-friendly and biodegradable renewable fuel, produced from oil/fat by a transesterification reaction with an alcohol (usually, methanol/ethanol) in the presence of acid/alkaline catalysts. Method and feedstock are two important problems which directly affect the cost of BDF production. In order to decrease this cost, a lot of cheap raw feedstock, recently, has been found, for example, Jatropha curcas oil, waste cooking oil, catfish oil, and rubber seed oil. Many production methods have also been developed. Among them, the co-solvent method developed by Maeda et al. has shown a lot of advantages. The remarkable advantage of this method is the reduction of production process cost due to consumption of less reagent amount, lower reaction temperature, shorter reaction time, and lower energy compared with the conventional method. This short review showed the comparison between the co-solvent method applied in BDF production and the conventional method, including the conditions of BDF production, the yield, the quality and the cost of produced BDF.
